Featured: Ducktails

To be released January 2011.

Ducktails is the one-man psychedelic pop project of Matthew Mondanile, guitarist for North Jersey's Real Estate and more importantly, a proud son of the mid-1980s. At 22 he started releasing his own cassette albums at first living in Northampton, MA. His first 7 inch came out on Breaking World Records followed by a string of LP's, Cassettes, and CD's on small independent likeminded labels like Not Not Fun, Olde English Spelling Bee, Release the Bats, Arbor, Goaty Tapes etc. Born in Ridgewood, NJ and now surrounded by a like-minded crew of young songwriters, Matt spends his time either touring or recording in the basement of his parent's house and partying in the city. Categorized by David Keenan as part of the "hypnagogic pop" movement, Ducktails attempts to realize a shared cultural memory and nostalgia through various genres, drone, psych, music concrete, etc. Ducktails III: Arcade Dynamics, is Mondanile's third official full-length LP and will be released by Woodsist Records in Jan. 2011. Digital gets physical.

ITS BEEN AWHILE.
It's time to get back into the swing of things. Beginning next Tuesday, we'll start getting new releases and start to chart again which means that all of you must play new music so our charts will represent WUSB and not the CMJ mainstream. RAWR. Remember, new releases are only things that have been released in the last 3 months and it can be anything! Let's conquer CMJ.
So here is the first thing I've burnt to CD in this wonderful new year:
Various Artists - Underwater Peoples Winter Review - Underwater Peoples Records
  1. Julian Lynch - Es's
  2. Pill Wonder - Restless
  3. Ducktails - Apple Walk
  4. Fluffy Lumbers - Adoration
  5. Big Troubles - Former Selves
  6. Andrew Cedermark - Ad Infinitum
  7. Frat Dad - Totally Afraid
  8. Dana Jewell - My T-Train Girl
  9. Airwaves - Sweetness
  10. Family Portrait - Killer Statements
  11. Alex Bleeker - These Days
  12. Mountain Man - Dog Song
  13. Real Estate - Orchard
  14. Rainbow Bridge - Rain Nair
  15. Liam The Younger - Please See
So some things: We have the Ducktails & Julian Lynch 12" in CR1 and you should really check them out. Ducktails is a guitarist from Real Estate who makes dreamy summery sounds and he also plays with Julian Lynch who makes weird soft experimental jamz that are quite wonderful. Fluffy Lumbers is founded by boy genius Samuel Something-or-other and he makes wonderful fuzzy garage pop jamz and he also plays drums for Frat Dad which also has a fuzzy lo-fi sound but it a lot grittier than Fluffy Lumbers. Andrew Cedermark used to play guitar in Titus Andronicus and his music is probably much better than what Titus Andronicus produces. He sounds noisy, wonderful, super loud at times, but the music he makes is excellent and he is probably one of the more talented of the artists you'll find on this compilation. Alex Bleeker is the bassist in Real Estate who has his own thing going as "Bleeker And The Freaks." And Real Estate, well you all know Real Estate since you played the shit out of their self titled debut LP released this fall. Airwaves some of you may know as well since a lot of you played their EP during the summer. They make lots of catchy acoustic jamz and they pretty much owned summer 09'. And Liam the Younger is a dude who sometimes plays guitar for Titus Andronicus. He also tends to make sweet acoustic jamz, but he's finally recorded a song with a full band, which I think is awesome and I definitely enjoy it more than the usual stuff he does.

MADD VINYLZ.

I WANT YOU TO PLAY VINYL.

So here's the super sweet vinyl update:

Ducktails 12"- Olde English Spelling Bee were kind enough to give us a Ducktails vinyl. Ducktails is Matt, a guitarist from Real Estate, from Ridgewood NJ. His music is experimental with lots of looping but still has the same dreamy summery beach feel Real Estate has. http://www.myspace.com/ducktailss The Mall is my favorite jam, but you'll have to play the vinyl to hear it. Real Estate always plays it at their shows and it's catchy as hell.

The Girls At Dawn 7"- Hozac is one of my favorite labels and I begged them to send us some jamz, especially the Wizzard Sleeve record. Anyway there's this awesome band called the Girls At Dawn who are from Brooklyn and maybe if you like the Vivian Girls or Eternal Summers or Reading Rainbow or Leichtenstien, you'll definitely like this record. Check them out here: http://www.myspace.com/thegirlsatdawn

Wizzard Sleeve 12" - Wizzard Sleeve is a sweet band from Alabama that play dark-ish punk-rock. " skin-crawling death-punk masterpiece debut LP." No Mongo is the song that hooked me in. Check the out here: http://www.myspace.com/wizzardsleeve

Plastic Crimewave Sound 7" - Delicious scuzz punk psychedelic prog machine from Chicago. The Grip is a sweet jam. http://www.myspace.com/plsticcrimewavesound

Sharp Ends 7" - Check out this sweet Canadian punk band hurr: http://www.myspace.com/sharpends "With an icy Tubeway Army / Joy division / Crisis vibe that blackens the virlces under your eyeballs and causes your pores to contract with its clammy, cold-wave simplicity."
I like them. You might, too.

ALSO - Even if you don't wanna play the jamz, check out the sick album art. I love vinyls, aaf.
